Pre-Budget Report
27/11/2001
Every penny of Scotland's share of the £1 billion
funding boost announced by the Chancellor will be spent on
improved public services, the First Minister said
today.
Mr McConnell said:
"Today I have announced a Ministerial team to focus on
our overwhelming priority - to deliver sustained
developments and improved public services.
"But I have made it clear that more must be done to
deliver progress on the ground. Every penny of the extra
£86 million announced today - or full Barnett
consequentials - will be directed at boosting the people's
priorities.
"I believe the Pre-Budget Report will help us build on
the strong foundations we have already created in Scotland
to ensure that we can take forward the Executive's policy
objectives and bring lasting benefit to the people of
Scotland."
Chancellor Gordon Brown told the Westminster Parliament
that an extra £86 million will be available for Scottish
services. Aslo included in his address to the House of
Commons were measures to promote productivity and
innovation, and help families and pensioners.
He said: "With economic stability the foundation, with a
steady and prudent approach to the public finances, I
believe we will have the strength to take the right
decisions and to build a stronger, fairer Britain."
