SNH appointments
04/10/2001
Two reappointments to the Board of Scottish Natural
Heritage have been announced today by Deputy Environment
and Rural Development Minister Rhona Brankin.
Dr John Markland has been reappointed as Chairman and
Michael Scott as Deputy Chairman, both from April 1,
2002.
A further position on the SNH Board will become
available from that date and this vacancy has recently been
advertised.
Ms Brankin said:
"I am delighted that Dr Markland and Michael Scott will
continue in their present roles heading the SNH Board. They
form a sound partnership which has been built from
complementary knowledge, experience and backgrounds.
Together they have helped SNH to achieve the targets set by
Scottish Ministers.
"Dr Markland has played an effective ambassadorial and
representational role as Chairman of SNH. I am sure he will
continue to use his knowledge of local and central
government to good effect.
"Mr Scott is highly regarded both within and outside
SNH. His sound judgement and strong links with
environmental non-government organisations have proved very
helpful."
BACKGROUND
1. Dr John Markland succeeded Magnus Magnusson KBE as
Chairman of SNH on 1 April 1999 (for which he receives
£38,806 per annum). He was previously Chief Executive of
Fife Regional Council and Fife Council, ex-Chairman of
Forward Scotland and is currently Chairman of Scottish
Leadership Foundation. Dr Markland has not engaged in any
political activity during the last 5 years. His appointment
will last until March 31, 2005.
2. Michael Scott, a freelance natural history writer and
consultant, has been a member of the SNH Board since April
1999. He was appointed Deputy Chairman in April 2000,
having filled the position on a temporary basis since
October 1999. He also serves as one of the SNH-appointed
members of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee. For
both posts, he is paid a total of £19,705 per annum.
Mr Scott is part-time Scottish Officer for Plantlife and
ex-Chairman of Scottish Environment LINK. He is a Director
of Highland Birchwoods, representing SNH, a position which
is unpaid. Mr Scott has undertaken no political activity
during the past five years. He will continue to serve as
SNH Deputy Chairman until March 31, 2005.
3. SNH is the Scottish Executive's main agency for
promoting wildlife and landscaping conservation. It
encourages public understanding and enjoyment of the
countryside while working in partnership with other
agencies to achieve integrated and sustainable
development.
4. The reappointments were made in line with the
guidance issued by the Commissioner for Public
Appointments.
