Deacon announces new chair of State Hospitals Board for Scotland

Health Minister, Susan Deacon, today announced the appointment of Mr Gordon Craig as Chairperson of the State Hospitals Board for Scotland.

Ms Deacon said:

"I am delighted to announce the appointment of Gordon Craig as the new Chair of the State Hospitals Board. He brings with him a range of skills and experience from his involvement in local government and the NHS.

"I also want to take this opportunity to thank the retiring Chair, Mr Nicky James, for his contribution to the Board."

BACKGROUND

  1. Gordon Craig's appointment is for four years from 21 September 2001 to 20 September 2005. He succeeds Mr Nicky James who is retiring as Chair.
  2. Mr Craig, aged 53, lives in Glasgow and has been a Trustee of the South Glasgow University Hospital's Trust since February 1999. He will be resigning from this position and does not hold any other public appointments.
  3. The State Hospitals Board provides treatment in a secure environment for mentally disordered patients requiring special security.
  4. Remuneration of £13,998 per annum (under review) is payable to the Chair of the State Hospitals Board for Scotland.
  5. Mr Craig is an active member of the Labour party.
  6. This appointment was made in line with the guidance issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
