£5 million project for A1 missing link

10/07/2001

Tenders are being invited for a £5 million project which will help dual part of the "missing link" on the A1.

Four contractors are being asked to bid for the contract to design, build and maintain 1.7km of dual carriageway from Bowerhouse to Spott.

Associated side roads and an underpass will be incorporated in the new road, part of which will be built along the line of the existing single carriageway trunk road.

Transport Minister Sarah Boyack last month gave the go-ahead for the £40 million A1 Haddington to Dunbar expressway which is due to start in summer 2002.

Ms Boyack said:

"This scheme is another example of the Executive's clear commitment to improve the A1 which is one of Scotland's vital links with England.

"The current upgrading work on the A1 will bring national and local benefits, helping to improve and modernise Scotland's strategic road network."

BACKGROUND

  1. The Bowerhouse to Spott scheme was announced by the Minister as part of a £680 million package of improvements to Scottish roads on 27 March 2001. Construction is due to start in March 2002.
  2. The Bowerhouse to Thistly Cross (Dunbar) stretch will be upgraded to dual carriageway following the main A1 project, completing the dual carriageway between Edinburgh city bypass and Innerwick.
