3. Test results are awaited from nine suspect farms at Dalrymple, Lockerbie, Moffat, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Twynholm, Pinwherry, Annan (2) and Kirtlebridge.
4. As foot and mouth is a highly-contagious disease, the Executive reiterates its advice for people to stay away from livestock and livestock farms. It would be extremely helpful if the media could also follow this advice to help prevent the spread of the disease.
5. The restrictions do not mean people will not be allowed to move in infected areas. Local authority and veterinary inspectors do, however, have powers to prevent people from entering any land or agricultural building by displaying a notice to that effect.
6. People outwith this area will, for the most part, be able to move freely, except where local authority or veterinary inspectors have closed particular areas of land.
7. The Scottish Executive continues to stress the importance of vigilance and avoiding contact with livestock and livestock farms.
8. Movement of vehicles on main thoroughfares outwith the immediate area of the affected farms will be unaffected. Trains will also be able to pass through areas as normal.
9. The infected area of at least a 10 kilometre radius follows topographic features and roads etc at its boundary.
10. If any local people have any concerns or queries, they should contact the national helpline staffed by the British Cattle Movement Society which has been set up to provide general advice on Foot and Mouth Disease. The BCMS has a website at
http://www.maff.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/fmd/.
Callers should telephone 0845 0504141. The helpline will be open 08.00 to 23.00 seven days a week.
As a backup for specific Scottish queries the Scottish Executive have a helpline on 0131 244 1910 which will be staffed during office hours Monday to Friday and 10.00 to 16.00 on Saturday and Sunday.
11. A further news release will be issued if there is any change in the status of the suspect farms.
