Boyack Awards £3 Million To New Gourock Public Transport Interchange

12/01/2001

Transport Minister Sarah Boyack today announced the award of £3 million to fund a new public transport interchange in Gourock.

The award gives the green light to plans to provide a one-stop terminal linking ferry, rail, bus and taxi services in the town, encouraging and increasing the use of public transport, as well as improving connections between different methods of travel.

Boyack said:

"I am delighted to make this award to Inverclyde Council. The new interchange will bring about real change in improving people's experiences of public transport and offer better choices to those who live and work in the area, as well as those who visit Gourock each year.

"This funding has been made available from the Public Transport Fund to help provide people throughout Scotland with real transport choices as well as improving a truly integrated public transport network."

Other contributions to the new interchange include £4.7 million from Railtrack, £5 million of private investment and £0.75 million from Inverclyde Council. The joint partnership demonstrates the positive results achieved through a combined approach.

The interchange will improve links between different types of transport by replacing the existing rail and ferry terminals as well as including facilities for park and ride, buses, and taxis as well as providing links for cyclists and pedestrians to Gourock Town Centre. The plans are part of wider redevelopment proposals for the waterfront.

BACKGROUND

1. Today's announcement is made as part of the third round of Public Transport Fund awards which were announced by the Transport Minister last November. The bid from Inverclyde Council was deferred at this point for further information and has now been accepted following a revised submission. It takes the current total from the third round awards to more than £36 million.
