Wasting energy wastes profit says Galbraith

31/01/2001

Energy efficiency is the most cost-effective way of saving energy for business, Environment Minister Sam Galbraith told representatives of the hospitality industry today.

Mr Galbraith was speaking at the launch of the Hospitable Climates Programme in Scotland, a partnership between the Hotel and Catering International Management Association (HCIMA) and the Scottish Energy Efficiency Office aimed at promoting energy efficiency. He said:

"The Hospitable Climates Programme signals to the hospitality industry that it is not too late to start being energy efficient. Savings for organisations can be significant. Typically, the Scottish Energy Efficiency Office has helped business to find savings of approximately 20% once an energy advisor has visited a company and raised awareness of their energy usage.

"We waste huge amounts of energy and produce too much carbon dioxide. And because of that, the Government is bringing in the climate change levy from 1 April. That is not because we see an easy opportunity to bring in revenue - the proceeds will go back to employers in reduced National Insurance contributions and support for energy efficiency.

"The climate change levy is intended to encourage non-domestic consumers to change their behaviour and reduce their energy bills.

"Savings from your energy bills go straight to your bottom line. There is no business or environmental advantage in using more energy than is absolutely necessary."

BACKGROUND

1. The HCIMA is the professional body for the international hospitality industry. With around 23,000 members in more than 100 countries, it is recognised throughout the world. Established in 1971, HCIMA's global influence brings together individuals from all sectors of the hospitality industry - hotels, contract catering, restaurants, fast food, pubs and clubs, hospitals, education, armed forces and the teaching profession.

2. Hospitable Climates is a partnership set up between the HCIMA and the Government's Energy Efficiency Best Practice programme. It has been set up in response to the need for all sectors of industry to strive toward greater energy efficiency whilst maintaining productivity and competitiveness. Today's launch was held at the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh.
