Provisional results of the 2000 school census

01/11/2000

The provisional results of the latest census of schools are published today by the Scottish Executive.

These results have been calculated using information from the annual census of schools in Scotland in September 2000. This news release updates the figures published in July 2000 in the statistical bulletin Summary Results of the 1999 School Census, Edn/B1/2000/3, which reported the results of the September 1999 Census.

The main findings are: -

  • There were 3,035 primary, secondary or special schools/departments in Scotland at September 2000, of which 2,865 were publicly funded. This compares with 2,877 publicly funded primary, secondary or special schools/departments at September 1999.
  • Over 751,900 pupils (excluding adults) were attending publicly funded primary, secondary and special schools in Scotland at September 2000, a decrease of 2,100 pupils from September 1999.
  • The number of pupils in publicly funded primary schools was 425,700 at September 2000, a decrease of some 5,700 pupils from September 1999.
  • Around 318,000 pupils attended publicly funded secondary schools at September 2000, an increase of almost 3,700 pupils from September 1999. Over 1,100 adults attended publicly funded secondary schools for day classes at September 2000, compared with nearly 1,400 in September 1999.
  • At September 2000, just under 8,300 pupils were based in publicly funded special schools in Scotland, compared with just over 8,300 in September 1999.
BACKGROUND

1. A census of schools is conducted each year in September. The School Census represents a snapshot of schools at Census week - 11 to 15 September 2000. Although the actual data collected from year to year varies slightly, a core dataset is collected annually on the number of children, pupils and teachers from each school.

2. These results will form the basis of the distribution of funds through the Grant Aided Expenditure exercise for Education to Local Authorities for 2001/2002. More comprehensive analyses of the results of the 2000 School Census will be published in 2001.

3. This news release and accompanying table, is available on the Scottish Executive website, www.scotland.gov.uk.
