Williamsburgh Proves Community Ownership Works - Alexander

06/09/2000

Williamsburgh Housing Association's work was commended today by Communities Minister Wendy Alexander as going a long way to meeting the housing need in the Johnstone area.

The Minister was opening the housing association's latest development of 24 new homes. The £1 million new development at Buchanan Way, Johnstone in Renfrewshire is part of a joint venture between Williamsburgh Housing Association and Loretto Housing Association to regenerate this area of Johnstone.

Ms Alexander said:

"Like so many of our housing associations, Williamsburgh is run by local residents. Time and again it has been demonstrated that this type of model, in partnership with Scottish Homes and the local authority, provides the sort of housing in which people want to live.

"Williamsburgh Housing Association has helped to transform the east end of Paisley, which 20 years ago contained the largest concentration of sub standard housing in the district. I want this kind of success to be spread across the public sector.

"Tomorrow sees the start of the second year of the Scottish Parliament. The flagship legislation will be the new housing bill. It will deliver the best ever tenants package: putting the tenants in charge, tackling anti-social neighbours, and delivering new rights for those carers who give up their homes to care for others.

"I want to congratulate Williamsburgh Housing on its 21 st anniversary for providing high quality housing to 876 households in Renfrewshire."
