ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNMENT STATISTICAL SERVICE
Information on housing and households is published today in the statistical bulletin Housing Trends in Scotland: Quarter Ended 31 March 1999. The bulletin shows that:
- A total of 3,100 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the first quarter of 1999, 900 less than the number of sales in the same period of 1998.
- During the first quarter of 1999, almost 6,810 new dwellings were started, 1,100 more than the number started in the same quarter of 1998. In addition, 5,300 dwellings were completed during the first quarter of 1999, 200 more than in the same quarter of 1998.
- There were almost 599,000 public sector dwellings at 31 March 1999, of which almost 19,500 were vacant.
- Local authorities estimate that there were around 69,800 Below Tolerable Standard dwellings at March 1999, almost 3,800 less than the estimated total for March 1998.
- There were 36,700 'sheltered' and 1,600 'very sheltered' dwellings provided for the elderly by public agencies and housing associations at 31 March 1999, 200 more 'very sheltered' dwellings than at 31 March 1998.
- Around 11,400 households applied to Scottish local authorities as homeless during the second quarter of 1999, 9% less than in the previous quarter and 4% more than in the same period of 1998.
- At the end of June 1999, there were around 4,200 households in temporary accommodation, having been placed there by a local authority under the homeless persons legislation, 5% fewer than at the end of March 1999, but almost the same as at the end of June 1998.
