Henry McLeish welcomes launch of Motherwell Bridge Aerospace Division

03/08/1999

Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, Henry McLeish today welcomed a £10 million investment by Motherwell Bridge Holdings in its aerospace division and its recent acquisition of Lucas Aerospace's Burnley factory.

Speaking during a visit to the company, Mr McLeish said:

"I am delighted to hear of Motherwell Bridge's £10m investment programme to take forward the major expansion of its aerospace manufacturing operation and its recent acquisition of the Lucas Aerospace plant at Burnley.

"I am also pleased the Scottish Executive has been able to offer Regional Selective Assistance to Motherwell Bridge's wholly-owned subsidiary, MB Aerospace Ltd in connection with this programme.

"It is expected that the new division, MB Aerospace, will create about 80 new jobs at Motherwell over the next three years and generate more than £20 million in annual turnover. This is excellent news for the local economy.

"It is this kind of development and forward thinking by a Scottish company that this Government applauds and is determined to encourage. I will do all I can in partnership with Scottish industry and the business community to help create the conditions and environment necessary to assist more indigenous companies to follow a similar path."
