Moray on-line for a better service

24/08/1999

Frank McAveety today saw how Moray Council is using the latest technology to make it easier for the public to get in touch with local government.

The Deputy Minister for Local Government was in Elgin Library looking at the council's latest website, which allows the public to tell the council directly what they think of their services.

The website, which has won awards for two years running, already incorporates information pages on the council's services as well as the area's structure and local plans.

The visit forms part of a series around Scotland taking forward the McIntosh recommendations on local government. Mr McAveety is seeing how Scottish councils are working towards a modern system that puts people first.

Mr McAveety said:

"Good local government is about connecting with communities and responding to people's needs. Good use of information technology makes the connection easier and faster. Moray Council's website is an excellent example.

"My meetings today with the Council have concentrated on similar ways to make the rest of its systems more open and responsive - to make McIntosh happen.

"These discussions are about structures and systems, but we should never lose sight of the people that councils are there to serve. We must seize this opportunity to put people first."
