Early pig estimates - June 1999 agricultural census

18/08/1999

Scotland's total pig herd decreased by 17 per cent to 559,000 between June 1998 and June 1999, according to figures published today by The Scottish Executive.

The total UK pig herd decreased by 9 per cent to 7.4 million over the same period. The Scottish pig breeding herd dropped by 17 per cent to around 61,000 - while the UK pig breeding herd fell by 12 per cent over the same period.

The Scottish early June 1999 pig estimates show a marginal increase in pig numbers compared to the estimates from March 1999 survey.

Early pig estimates from the June 1999 Agricultural Census are published today by the Scottish Executive Rural Affairs Department. The census covered main holdings, but the figures include estimates for minor holdings.

BACKGROUND

1. The June 1999 early pig estimates for Scotland are based on 58 per cent of main holdings with pigs and 87 per cent of pigs in June 1998. These figures are provisional and are liable to be amended in the light of returns received at a later date. The pig breeding herd comprises sows in pig, gilts in pig, and other sows for breeding.

2. The March 1999 survey was specifically targeted at holdings which had pigs in December 1998. The June and December surveys are larger and will cover holdings moving into pig production. Estimates from the June and December surveys are therefore more robust and give a firmer guide to trends.

3. The results for the UK - and separately for each country - are released today and are available on the MAFF website at www.maff.gov.uk.
