Details of children looked after in Scotland at March 31, 1999 are published today by the Scottish Executive Education Department.
These results have been produced using information supplied by local authorities in Scotland. This news release updates the figures published in December 1998 in the News Release Information on Looked After Children: at 31st March 1997 and 1998, .
The main findings are:
· The number of children being looked after in Scotland by local authorities increased from 10,800 in 1998 to 11,200 in 1999, a rise of four per cent. This compares with almost 12,300 in 1988.
· Almost all of the increase in total numbers between 1998 and 1999 was as a result of a rise in the number aged 11 years or less.
· The total children being looked after in Scotland represents 9.8 children per 1,000 population aged 0-17 years.
· Around 58 per cent of the children looked after were boys and around 55 per cent of the children were aged 12 years or older.
· Just under half of the children looked after lived at home and almost 30 per cent lived with foster carers.
· The number of children looked after per 1,000 population aged 0-17 years varied considerably between authorities, with Orkney Islands having the fewest and Glasgow City the most, at under four and over 17 per 1,000 population aged 0-17 years, respectively.
