Major roadworks on A77 North of Kilmarnock

11/05/1999

The Scottish Office advise motorists that major roadworks are due to commence on Friday May 14, 1999 for two weeks on the A77 between Kilmarnock and Glasgow.

A contraflow will be set up for the duration of the works with only one lane available in each direction. Traffic signals will be in operation between 1900 hours and 0630 hours during the night and all day Sunday. Serious delays are expected at peak times and drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys or seek an alternative route or mode of transport.

A number of slip road closures at the north end of the Fenwick Bypass will also be in force during the works. Local diversions will be set up.

BACKGROUND

1. The works involve the reconstruction of a worn out 2.0 km section of the A77 trunk road north of Fenwick and are valued at £480,000 and will be carried out on a lane rental basis where the contractor receives a bonus for early completion or a charge if the works are late.

2. The contractor for the scheme is Barr Ltd of Ayr. The works have been designed and will be supervised by East Ayrshire Council as part of the Clyde Local Authority Consortium. Strathclyde Police have been fully consulted during the design and planning process.

3. This section of the A77 carries in excess of 35,000 vehicles per day.
