Dial a Job in Scotland - New One-Stop Initiative to Help the Unemployed
05/01/1999
ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE EMPLOYMENT SERVICE
The Employment Service today launched a brand new job service line for Scotland which will give jobseekers access to over to over 300,000 vacancies across the UK.
Employment Service Direct is a telephone service available to Jobseekers from anywhere in the country for the cost of a local call.
Welcoming the new service line, Scottish Business and Industry Minister Lord Macdonald said:
"Employment Service Direct is an exciting and innovative approach to help people into work and is a welcome addition to the wide variety of programmes already available through Jobcentres and the Government's New Deal programme. This service is not only available to existing jobcentre customers, but to anyone currently looking for work. By making one phone call, callers can get access to some 30,000 jobs at any one time.
"Tackling the problem of unemployment is a top priority for this Government, with over £300 million being invested in Scotland to get young people into work. So far, the New Deal for 18-24 year olds initiative has seen almost 19,000 people enter the programme, with almost 4000 finding work."
When a jobseeker rings the 0845 6060234 hotline the call will be immediately connected to a member of one of the new Employment Service Teams that have been set up across the country to operate the new service. The recruitment adviser has immediate access to the Employment Service database of jobs locally or nationally.
BACKGROUND
1. The service will compliment those provided to unemployed people and employers by jobcentres. It will be available until 1800 hours on weekdays and from 0900 to 1300 hours on Saturdays.
2. The service will be available to unemployed people looking for work. It will also benefit employers by helping fill their job vacancies quickly and effectively. The service will use the Employment Service vacancy computer database, which holds some 300,000 vacancies which employers are seeking to fill.
