More homes in Scotland in 1997

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNMENT STATISTICAL SERVICE

There was an estimated 2,267,000 dwellings in Scotland at 31 December 1997, an increase of 19,000 compared with the estimated number in 1996.

This, and other information about housing trends in Scotland, is published today by The Scottish Office in the statistical bulletin Housing Trends in Scotland: Quarter Ended 31 December 1997.

Sixty per cent of the total dwelling stock is estimated to have been in owner occupation at the end of 1997, one per cent more than the proportion of owner occupation in 1996.

The building of around 4,300 new dwellings was started during the final quarter of 1997, bringing the total number of housebuilding starts during 1997 to 21,200. In addition around 5,000 dwellings were completed during the final quarter of 1997, bringing the total number of completions during the year to 21,500, 800 more than in 1996.

Around 3,700 applications were made by sitting tenants to buy public authority dwellings during the final quarter of 1997, bringing the total number of applications during the year to 21,400, an increase of around 1,600 on the number in 1996. The number of sales of public authority dwellings to sitting tenants also increased in 1997 to 15,500 from around 11,400 in 1996.
