No more time to waste says Sewel
26/10/1998
Waste is often a valuable material in the wrong place. That was the message given by the Environment Minister Lord Sewel as he officially opened the Caledonian Shanks Centre for Waste Management at East Kilbride today.
Lord Sewel said:
"Waste management is like street lighting - nobody notices until it's not there. But it is a central issue in our relationship with the environment. It is one we have to bring under control in order to achieve sustainable development.
"We need to establish a consensus that waste matters. This is at the heart of the strategy for waste management which the Scottish Environment Protection Agency is preparing.
"The new Caledonian Shanks Centre for Waste Management will provide a unique educational opportunity in a discipline somewhat neglected in the past. It is especially fitting that the funding of the Centre comes from an environmental source and I congratulate Shanks & McEwan for their support of this venture. It will offer the Scottish Parliament a real bank of expertise on which to draw."
BACKGROUND
The Caledonian Shanks Centre for Waste Management is a joint venture between Shanks & McEwan and Glasgow Caledonian University. It will deliver waste management solutions for the industry. It will undertake programmes of research and aims to deliver lifelong learning activities and project management in the realisation of environmental solutions.
