Frost advice to the seed potato industry
12/10/1998
With winter fast approaching, The Scottish Office Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries Department is today issuing advice to people involved in storing and transporting seed potatoes about moving stock when extremely cold weather is forecast.
Seed potatoes are particularly susceptible to frost damage and should not be exposed to freezing conditions. Growers, merchants and others involved in the industry are advised to avoid moving unprotected seed potatoes when meteorologists predict temperatures of -3°C or below and frost is likely to continue in daylight hours.
BACKGROUND
1. The Frost Warning Service to the seed potato industry previously operated by the Department was discontinued from October 1997. The Scottish Potato Trade Association has since arranged an alternative frost warning service. Anyone wishing further information about this should contact the Association's Secretary, David Hunter at 25 South Methven Street, Perth, PH1 5ES (telephone: 01738 620451).
