Helen Liddell launches millennium learning experience
30/10/1998
Education events for the Millennium got underway in Scotland today when Scottish Education Minister Helen Liddell launched the Millennium Learning Experience at the Robert Owen Centre, New Lanark Mills.
The Learning Experience aims to make a practical contribution to education in the Millennium. Activities include commissioning new material for learning, quickening the pace of new product development and carrying out projects with schools.
Mrs Liddell said:
"Scotland has recognised the tremendous opportunity presented by the Millennium with a variety of projects well underway. The Dynamic Earth Centre next to the site of the new Scottish Parliament and making Hampden Park a truly international stadium are two of our larger projects, but there are many smaller scale projects all over Scotland involving the whole community.
"Scotland has attracted the highest spend per head of population of any part of the UK - £38 for each person in Scotland, totalling £196 million overall with 19 projects taking place in over 170 sites.
"The focus of The Learning Experience will be on schools. It will be for schools to decide if and how they take part. Our aim is to produce a lasting legacy of materials and ideas to initiate innovative thinking and broaden horizons.
"The Learning Experience will complement the existing Scottish curriculum and will contribute to our aim of building a world class education system for Scotland.
"The Millennium celebrations will provide tremendous opportunities for the private sector to build lasting links with education and help raise our prospects for real achievement."
