Galbraith welcomes modernisation of health services in Dundee

29/06/1998

Scottish Health Minister Sam Galbraith today welcomed a series of projects in Dundee which will contribute to Scotland's drive to become the most modern Health Service in Europe.

At Ninewells Hospital Mr Galbraith 'accepted the keys' on behalf of Dundee Teaching Hospitals Trust from the contractor to mark the completion of the £35 million Dundee Royal Infirmary Transfer Project, bringing the majority of acute services under one roof. The Minister then performed a turf cutting ceremony, laying the foundation for a new Limb Fitting Centre at Ninewells.

Mr Galbraith said:

"The completion of the transfer project will mean that patients in Tayside can now expect a greatly improved quality of service and clinical outcome as a result of these 21st century facilities.

"Moving the limb fitting facility to the Ninewells campus will mean a high quality environment for patients where all services will be available within one integrated clinical environment. The proposed new centre provides evidence of our commitment to improve the independence and quality of life of individuals".

Opening a new Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation at the Royal Victoria Hospital Mr Galbraith said:

"This unit marks an important step in the development of a comprehensive neuro- rehabilitation service for Tayside. A service like this can only be achieved when all parts of the NHS are working closely together.

"My aim is to ensure that patients are at the centre of everything the NHS does. They have the right to expect the best and most modern treatment available."

BACKGROUND

1 As part of Tayside Health Board's Acute Services Strategy, it was agreed in 1993-94 that services at Dundee Royal Infirmary should transfer to the Ninewells Hospital complex. A contract was let to Miller Construction in January 1996. The construction period was 27 months with final completion due in early July 1998.

2 The services provided for amputees within Tayside and Fife are currently spread over a number of sites, including Ninewells Hospital, Dundee Royal Infirmary and the Dundee Limb Fitting Centre at Brought Ferry. This project proposal will bring all of the services provided for amputees together on to the Ninewells Hospital campus.
