Malcolm Chisholm opens new homes for Tollcross

Mr Malcolm Chisholm MP, Minister for Housing at The Scottish Office today opened a new £4.8 million housing development at Tollcross Road, Glasgow. The development, with 72 new build flats, will increase the range of housing options within this part of the city.

Mr Chisholm said:

"This project is an excellent example of key agencies working together under the Glasgow Regeneration Alliance. Tollcross Housing Association, Scottish Homes, the Glasgow Development Agency and Glasgow Council have all played a part in getting this project off the ground.

"Tollcross Housing Association has contributed greatly to the improvement of housing conditions in this part of Glasgow since 1974. Their involvement in this project indicates that they are still helping provide a choice of high quality houses for rent and sale at an affordable price for the people of Tollcross.

"I believe that a decent, secure home is essential to the well-being of every household in Scotland and this Government has already taken action including providing an extra £15.5 million for housing in Scotland this year and initiatives to help the homeless and fill empty properties."

BACKGROUND

1. Tollcross Housing Association commissioned 24 of the 72 flats being built. 16 of its flats will be for rent and the remaining eight will be available for shared ownership.

2. Tollcross Housing Association is community based and operates in the East End of Glasgow. Registered in 1974, the Association is one of the longest established in the city and now has 650 properties in management. The development at 800 Tollcross Road was constructed by Cruden Estates

3. Shared ownership allows a purchaser to buy a share in a property and rent the remainder from a housing association. A sharing owner has the right to purchase further shares if he/she wishes however, there is no obligation to do so. Priority is given to first time buyers with limited housing alternatives, public sector tenants and those with special needs who are unable to purchase outright a home suitable for their needs.
