Remembrance Sunday 1997

01/10/1997

Her Majesty The Queen has decided that November 9 shall be observed as Remembrance Sunday. The customary two minute silence will be observed from 11.00 hours.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Reverend Alexander McDonald, has issued the following message.

"It is important that we should look back with gratitude and remember the sacrifices of former generations. Indeed, many still alive today, bear the physical, emotional and psychological scars of war. Our generation has been spared world war on the scale witnessed between 1914 and 1918 and again between 1939 and 1945. Indeed we live in an age of increasing co-operation in which old barriers are breaking down. Yet there is still not a day without a war being fought somewhere in our world, at some considerable price to those who suffer its immediate effects.

"As we observe the traditional Two Minutes' Silence at 11.00 hours on Sunday November 9, we remember all victims of war and pray for peace throughout the earth."
