Listed Buildings provide new homes for Leith

06/10/1997

Mr Malcolm Chisholm MP, Minister for Housing at The Scottish Office, today launched the start of work on Edinvar Housing Association's new £2.6 million development in Leith. The project at Cables Wynd converts the old Leith Nurses Home, previously part of Leith Hospital, to provide a total of 48 residential flats. It is expected to be completed in early 1999.

Mr Chisholm said:

"This project will bring a listed building in the heart of Leith back into productive use. Edinvar is to be commended for taking on the challenge of such an innovative and complex task.

"It is particularly pleasing that this project is the result of a partnership between a number of agencies in the public and voluntary sector. The contribution being made here by the City of Edinburgh Council, Scottish Homes, the Lothian Health Board and Edinvar Housing Association will, I am sure, be rewarded when the completed development is fully occupied and contributing to the expansion of the vibrant community of Leith.

"Quite apart from improving the appearance of this area the Cables Wynd project will provide an integrated housing development which will allow all sections of the community the chance to share in a major regeneration project. It will provide housing for a mixture of tenants some of whom will have learning difficulties.

"I look forward very much to seeing the completed project which I am sure will make an excellent contribution to the continuing regeneration of this important part of the city."

BACKGROUND

Edinvar Housing Association was registered in 1973, originally to provide student accommodation in Edinburgh city centre. It has since widened its remit to include a range of housing in new build and rehabilitated projects for people requiring care in the community.
