Scottish Office Health Department Appoints new Chief Scientist

The Rt Hon Donald Dewar MP, Secretary of State for Scotland has approved the appointment of Professor Graeme Catto, Vice Principal and Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine at Aberdeen University, to be the next Chief Scientist at The Scottish Office. Professor Catto will take up appointment today in succession to Professor Ian Bouchier who retires at the end of September.

Professor Catto will combine his new duties with his university appointment.

BACKGROUND

Professor Catto has been Vice Principal at Aberdeen University since 1995, Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine since 1992 and Professor in Medicine and Therapeutics since 1988. He is also Vice Chairman of Aberdeen Royal Hospitals NHS Trust. He is a native of Aberdeen and was educated at Robert Gordon's College and Aberdeen University. Professor Catto (aged 52) is married with one son and one daughter.
