1996 Combine Crops Survey: final report on production and disposal
02/10/1997
| The pattern of grain disposals from the 1996 cereals harvest was similar to that of 1995, according to a survey conducted by The Scottish Office Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries Department. Most of the grain was sold in the period immediately after harvest. By the end of December 1996, disposals of barley accounted for 82 per cent of production, virtually the same proportion as in the previous year. For wheat, 75 per cent had been disposed of by the same time, slightly less than the proportion of a year earlier. The final results of the survey confirm the rise of nine per cent in total cereals production over 1995 announced by the Department in January 1997. BACKGROUND 1. The first table below shows the area grown, and the yield and production estimates for cereals, oilseed rape and forage peas in Scotland in 1996. Comparable figures for 1995 and average yields for 1991-1995 are also shown. The second table shows the amount of grain used or sold each month from October 1996 to June 1997 - both as actual quantities and as a percentage of grain produced - and the total remaining on farm at the end of each month. Comparable figures for the previous year have been included. 2. The figures are obtained from a random sample of cereal growing farms in Scotland. 3. The yield and production results were issued in Scottish Office News Release 1679/96. 4. The tables can be obtained by fax from the phone number below. |
