Document of the Month - May
This year for local history month the National
Archives of Scotland selected a Scottish town,
Montrose, and then investigated the different types of
records which give details of the development of, and
life in, that town.
All the documents refer to Montrose in one way or
another. However, many of these record categories
might equally have information about local history in your
area.
We hope the range of records displayed here will
encourage local historians to investigate several different
sources when trying to recreate the history of an area that
interests them.

The documents include:
A photograph of North British Railway locomotive
'Montrose' from the Montague Smith Collection at the
National Archives ofScotland.
A page from the kirk session minute book for
Montrose parish church. Dated August 1761, it shows
some of the many facets of community life which
involved the local church.

estimates for renovation of the parish church.
