Alex Smith became a Scottish Government Non-Executive Director in 2008.
Alex brings an external and independent view drawing on his finance and management background. He is also a member of Transport Scotland's Audit and Risk Committee, Vice Chair of NHS 24 and Chair of its audit committee, a board member of the Scottish Public Pensions Agency and Chair of its audit committee and has served on several national committees mainly but not exclusively relating to the NHS where he has just completed the chairmanship of a review of NHS Senior Pay Arrangements. His professional experience was in the private sector as an accountant but the major part of his career was in the NHS as a Health Board Finance Director and latterly Chief Executive. Alex was seconded to the Scottish Government as Director of Finance for the Scottish NHS for a three year period up to his retirement in 2008.
