Justice Directorate

Director: Bridget Campbell

The Directorate is responsible for a broad range of Scottish Government policies relating to the Justice system including both civil and criminal law, the reform of courts and legal services, the management and rehabilitation of offenders and support for victims and witnesses of crime. It is also responsible for the Scottish Tribunals Service.

Purpose

To support the rule of law and maintain the framework of a fair society by promoting efficient, effective and accessible administration of justice and effective rehabilitation of offenders in order to improve community safety and inspire public confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that civil and criminal law reflects the needs of society and meets EU and international requirements
  • Drive forward improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of the justice system
  • Design policy on punishment and rehabilitation which reduces reoffending
  • Efficient administration of devolved tribunals and seek further devolution of currently reserved tribunals
  • Improve public health and safety through effective licensing frameworks
