SE Government Car Service (GCS): Disposal of Vehicles

The programme for the replacement of Government Car Service (GCS) vehicles falls within a policy that is in general use across the whole Scottish Executive fleet. For dual fuelled (petrol/LPG) vehicles the policy is (unless there is a major problem with the car) that when a vehicle has reached 60,000 miles or 4 years consideration is given to its replacement. The decision depends on the condition and history of the car. Normally GCS do not sell cars at that point, with around 80,000 - 90,000 miles typical for recent disposals. These limits (figures) are likely to be increased as the cars purchased over the past 3 years are likely to have a longer useful life.

The Scottish Executive currently purchases all its fleet of vehicles, including those used by the Government Car Service. This is in preference to leasing or hiring as it provides the most cost-effective option for tax payers. The Executive periodically tests the marketplace to ensure that they continue to achieve the best value for money.
