How many Scottish Executive staff or staff employed by the Scottish Executive receive free Rail or Bus travel to and from work as part of their terms and conditions of employment?

Staff who are required to travel on official business (official travelling) are re-imbursed the full cost of their travel. A scheme exists to support Scottish Executive staff with additional travel costs incurred as a result of a permanent and compulsory transfer to a new permanent workplace.

"Official travelling" means travel for the purposes of official business. This includes attendance at departmental selection boards, promotion boards, training courses, and journeys made on recall to duty from annual leave. For daily travel to and from a detached duty workplace only, any excess travelling costs will normally be payable. . "Official travelling" does not include travelling between the home and permanent workplace.

How many Scottish Executive staff or staff employed by the Scottish Executive receive First Class Rail travel as part of their terms and conditions of employment?

Scottish Executive staff in Band B3 and above totalling 1,497 (within the SE core departments) when undertaking official travel by rail are eligible to travel first class. As with senior executives in the private sector, First Class travel allows better opportunity to work while travelling.

What are the Grades and Job titles of those staff who receive first class rail travel?

Staff in Bands B3, Band C and the Senior Civil Service when undertaking official travel by rail are eligible to travel first class.

What is the annual cost to the Scottish Executive of providing rail and bus travel to and from work for Scottish Executive staff or staff employed by the Scottish Executive ?

The overall cost of official travel by rail to the Scottish Executive in the period 1April 04 to 31 March 05 was £947,922.00. Since devolution SE staff have been required to travel extensively to engage more fully with Stakeholders throughout Scotland and the UK. We do not hold information on the annual cost of providing bus travel. Such costs however will be included in the overall costs of business travel by SE staff which in 2004/05 was £6m. These overall costs include official rail, air and bus travel and associated subsistence costs.

What is the Annual cost to the of providing first class rail travel to and from work Scottish Executive staff or staff employed by the Scottish Executive?

We do not hold information on the annual cost of providing first class travel for SE staff. The annual cost however for such travel in 2004/05 is included in the overall costs for rail travel provided above.
