Information relating to the decision
to site the HQ of the National Theatre for Scotland in
the Easterhouse Cultural Campus
Extract from the letter sent by Frank McAveety
in his capacity as Minister for Tourism, Culture and
Sport, to Richard Findlay, Chairman of the National
Theatre for Scotland, on 12 May 2004
"It is probably worth setting out why I chose the
Easterhouse Cultural Campus. Primarily it was so the
National Theatre would be part of, and help foster, the
creative, inter-disciplinary environment which remains the
main purpose of the campus. I felt strongly that such an
environment would be beneficial both for the company and
for the other occupants and users of the campus
facilities.
There has always been, from Glasgow City Council's
original ambitions for the campus, an expectation that all
the users and tenants of the new facility will be able to
gain and add value to each other's activities.
On a practical level, Glasgow City Council envisaged
that many of the facilities in the building, such as the
auditorium, meeting spaces and support services, would be
made readily available to all tenants and users of the
building.
The location sends a clear signal to communities
throughout Scotland that there is no automatic reason for
HQs of our prestigious institutions to be located in city
centres, and that all areas of our country have intrinsic
merit and should enjoy parity of esteem."
