Transport Directorate delivers Scottish Ministers' priorities for transport, working closely in partnership with Transport Scotland. The Directorate is responsible for the implementation of the National Transport Strategy; policy development on issues such as sustainable transport, local roads, bus, ferries, ports, aviation, cycling, walking and road safety; and working with the freight industry and British Waterways.

Our Goal
To work with Ministers, Transport Scotland, our other delivery partners and stakeholders to create a successful Scotland with a well connected, safe and reliable transport system, which helps deliver sustainable economic growth; provides good quality public transport that is integrated, accessible and affordable and supports all communities including those in less accessible parts of Scotland and encourages the use of more sustainable and active travel modes which contribute to a greener, healthier Scotland.
Objectives
- To ensure better transport links with faster and more reliable journey times and improved connections to help build and sustain economic growth.
- Improve the quality, accessibility and affordability of public transport to provide access to essential services and economic opportunities.
- Provide support for transport services to communities in less accessible or remote parts of Scotland to enable them to share in Scotland's economic prosperity.
- Reduce accidents by promoting road safety and driver awareness.
- Tackle the issues of climate change, healthy living and air quality by promoting public transport and encouraging individuals to shift from the private car to more sustainable, healthy and active forms of transport.
- Supporting the freight industry to reduce emissions by taking freight off road; encouraging the adoption of new low carbon technologies, cleaner vehicles and alternative fuels.
