Directorate for Lifelong Learning is headed by Andrew Scott. Lifelong Learning Directorate is responsible for Scottish Government policy on all aspects of learning that take place after people leave school - from basic employability training through to post-doctoral research. Working for the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, the Directorate takes a close interest in the interface between the world of learning (training, skills enhancement, academic) and that of work/enterprise/economic growth.
The Directorate is structured into five divisions including:
- Higher Education & Learner Support
- Enterprise & Employability for Young People
- Employability & Skills
- Further and Adult Education
- Learning Connections
Our Goal
In the short-term identify and deliver actions to help those affected by the current economic circumstances. In the long-term create the skilled and educated workforce that is required to help drive sustainable economic growth.
Objectives
- Ensure there are opportunities for everyone to improve their knowledge and skills throughout their lives through creating a clear, coherent, fir for purpose and connected learning infrastructure.
- Improve the impact of knowledge created, or exploited, in Scotland on the country's economic performance by developing a reputation for research excellence, encouraging knowledge exchange between the business and academic communities and promoting Scottish education overseas.
- Ensure that skills-related learning meets the needs of learners and business.
- Ensure learning opportunities are understood by people of all ages through improving the information, advice, guidance and financial support available to learners.
- Help unemployed individuals move into sustainable employment and improve employability through providing effective interventions to address weaknesses in core skills, knowledge of and engagement with the world of work and enterprising attitudes.
