Climate Change and Water Industry Director

John Mason
The Directorate for Climate Change and Water Industry is led by John Mason, who also leads the Directorate for Environmental Quality.
The Directorate is structured into two divisions:
- Climate Change
- Water Industry
The Directorate is responsible for advising Scottish Ministers on climate change policy in Scotland. It is committed to raising public awareness of climate change; mainstreaming climate thinking into key policy areas within the Government; working closely with stakeholders; improving understanding of climate change and its impacts.
Scottish Government sponsorship of Scottish Water and the economic regulator, the Water Industry Commission for Scotland, is critical to the economic vitality of Scotland. Scottish Water plays an important part in the economic health of many parts of Scotland and this will be even more important during the current downturn in the construction sector. The Directorate is also setting the framework for Scottish Water's investment programme for 2010-14 which will continue the overhaul of Scotland's water network which is good for customers, businesses and households, and good for the environment.
Our Goal
To deliver world-leading approaches on climate change and provide the framework for delivering the most cost-effective and environmentally-friendly water company in the UK.
Objectives
- To promote sustainable and efficient water services through effective and responsible management of the Scottish Water industry.
- To ensure that the mechanisms are in place to reduce our emissions and make the changes needed to adapt to the effects of climate change that cannot now be avoided.
