Professor Maggie Gill

The Rural and Environment Research and Analysis Directorate (RERAD) aim is to build a platform of knowledge that strengthens the way in which policies developed in the other Greener Directorates, principally those working in the rural, environment and marine areas, contribute to the delivery of the Purpose of this Government.

The Directorate is unique in the Scottish Government in the breadth of its skill base, including: economists; social researchers; statisticians; animal, plant and environmental scientists; as well as specialists in geographical information systems; and is headed by Professor Maggie Gill, who is also Chief Scientific Adviser for Rural Affairs and the Environment.

Our Goal

To promote evidence based policy making by providing government with relevant, robust, timely and accessible scientific, socio-economic and statistical advice, research and horizon scanning on rural, environmental and marine issues.

Objectives
  • To provide scientific, socio-economic and statistical advice and expertise to policy colleagues.
  • To generate new knowledge by commissioning and managing scientific research.
  • To support our main research providers and ensure that Scotland has the necessary scientific capability.
  • To maximise value for money through efficient use of resource.
  • To maximise the impact and value of our work by ensuring that it is useful, relevant, accessible and meaningful to stakeholders.
