Environmental Quality Director

John Mason
The Directorate for Environmental Quality is led by John Mason who also leads the Directorate for Climate Change and Water Industry.
The Directorate is structured into three divisions:
- Waste and Pollution Reduction
- Drinking Water Quality
- Water, Air, Soils & Flooding
The Directorate is central to the Scottish Government's stewardship of the environment, and plays a key role in ensuring that the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil that we cultivate is of the highest environmental standard. The Directorate is heavily engaged in delivering the Government's commitments to make Scotland a Zero Waste society, and to ensure that Scotland has flood protection arrangements fit for today's society. The Directorate also sponsors the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and is currently implementing and negotiating on a number of EU Directives.
